Leonardo Drew Number 360, Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Ending 29 Oct
Wow, Number 360 - Leonardo Drew’s YSP commission for their 18th-century Chapel, is so powerful, chaotic and expansive! It stopped me in my tracks. Number 360 (Drew’s works are all numbered) is closing soon - it’s on until 29 Oct.
It’s a powerful reflection on the weight of collective experience, memory, and the cycles of life and death, decay and regeneration. This resonates within a historic building where many lives have been played out for centuries – unknown to us, yet somehow conveyed by the atmosphere of the space - YSP.
Being a relative newcomer to Drew’s work, this week I took a deep dive into his catalog.
Drew is known for creating wall-based abstract sculptural works that play on a tension between order and chaos. The work typically uses manipulated organic materials to create sculptures that appear to burst from the wall, resembling populated cities or urban wastelands and evoke the mutability of the natural world.
Take a look at this short video of Drew discussing the commission. It is such a joyous and engaging watch - he’s an enthralling character.
Previous YSP Chapel commissions include works by Shirin Neshat, Ai Weiwei, and Yinka Shonibare.
